7.6 earthquake hits South Pacific
APAP – 2 hrs 20 mins ago

NUKU'ALOFA, Tonga (AP) — A strong earthquake struck far off the South Pacific island nation of Tonga on Friday, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports the magnitude-7.6 quake struck Friday at 1:57 p.m. (1757 GMT) about 541 miles (870 kilometers) south of Nuku'Alofa on Tonga. The quake struck at a depth of 24 miles (39 kilometers).

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue a tsunami alert, but its report on the quake said sea level readings indicated that a tsunami was generated.

The quake hit 112 miles (180 kilometers) from New Zealand's remote, volcanic Kermadec Islands. The remote outpost is generally uninhabited aside from a weather station and a hostel for visiting New Zealand scientists and staff.

New Zealand Civil Defense officials issued but then quickly canceled a tsunami warning.

Another magnitude-7.6 earthquake struck the region in July, but the eight New Zealand staffers at the Raoul Island outpost at the northern end of the Kermadecs were unharmed.

The region lies on the "Ring of Fire" — an arc of earthquake and volcanic zones that stretches around the Pacific Rim. About 90 percent of the world's quakes occur in the region.

Magnitude 5.8 quake hits N. Chile, no damage seen

By Todd Eastham | Reuters – 1 hr 38 mins ago

SANTIAGO (Reuters) - A 5.8 magnitude earthquake shook northern Chile early on Saturday, but there were no immediate reports of any damage to property or copper mines in the area, emergency and mine officials said.

The temblor struck at 3:13 a.m. EDT and was centered 13 miles northeast of Antofagasta, at a depth of 20.5 miles, the U.S. Geological Survey reported, revising the quake down from an original reading of 6.0 magnitude.

State emergency office ONEMI said the temblor had knocked out cell phone services in some areas, but it had received no reports of damages.

A union official at Anglo American's 90,000 tonne per year Mantos Blancos deposit near the epicenter said workers had felt the tremor, but operations were not affected.

Earthquake: 3 Temblors Rattle Oklahoma

By LEEZEL TANGLAO | Good Morning America – 9 hours ago

Three small earthquakes rattled central Oklahoma early today.

The quakes ranged from 2.7 to 4.7 in magnitude, with the first temblor hitting the region at 2:12 a.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

While there were no injuries or major damage, residents reported feeling the shaking.

"It shook for a long time… you could feel the whole house shaking and we could hear the dishes rattling in the kitchen too," said Jim Greff, city manager of Prague, which is about six miles away from the epicenter of the quakes and 50 miles east of Oklahoma City.

Claudie Morton, a police dispatcher in Prague told ABC News Radio that it "felt like the ceiling was going to cave in, the building shook, the windows and glass rattled…"

But some people didn't even felt the quakes.

Jess Anshutz, who manages a bar in Oklahoma City, said he didn't even realize there was an earthquake until someone texted him about it.

"It just kind of jolted and scared people but from what Ive heard, there's not any damage at all," Anshutz said.

ABC News' Sharon Reid contributed to this report.

Strong quake hits southern Japan

AP – 30 mins ago

TOKYO (AP) — A fairly strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 has hit off the shores of Japan's southern Okinawa Island.

Officials said the quake Tuesday about 135 miles (220 kilometers) away from the island was not expected to cause a tsunami. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Northeastern Japan was devastated by a massive earthquake and tsunami on March 11 that left nearly 20,000 people dead or missing. Japan, which lies along the Pacific "Ring of Fire," is one of the world's most seismically active countries.

Magnitude 4.7 earthquake shakes Oklahoma after larger temblor

By Steve Olafson in Oklahoma City
Reuters – 2 hrs 3 mins ago

OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) - Another earthquake, this one with a magnitude of 4.7, shook Oklahoma on Monday night, two days after a larger temblor hit the state and damaged 14 homes, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The latest quake hit at 8:47 p.m. in the same rural central Oklahoma area as the larger quake, about 43 miles east of Oklahoma City, and was felt throughout Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas, according to reports to the USGS.

No damage or injuries were reported. Oklahomans have been warned that aftershocks following Saturday's 5.6 magnitude quake could continue for weeks or months.

Prior to Saturday's earthquake, the largest quake previously recorded in Oklahoma was a 5.5-magnitude tremor in 1952, the USGS said.

Quake off east Indonesia panics many; no tsunami

By NINIEK KARMINI - Associated Press | AP – Mon, Nov 14, 2011

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — A strong earthquake hit waters off eastern Indonesia on Monday, sending people on nearby islands fleeing from their homes in panic. Fearing a tsunami that never came, villagers living along coastlines ran to high ground.

The 6.3-magnitude quake was centered 12 miles (20 kilometers) beneath the Molucca Sea, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
Many people in Ternate, the town in North Maluku province that was closest to the epicenter, scurried from shaking buildings, said George Rajaloa, a resident.
"I ran with everyone else," he said.

Suhardjono, from the Indonesian meteorological and geophysics agency, said at that magnitude and depth there was no danger of tsunami.

But residents fled beaches all the same.

Indonesia straddles a series of fault lines that make the vast island nation prone to volcanic and seismic activity.

A giant quake off the country on Dec. 26, 2004, triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean that killed 230,000 people, half of them in Indonesia's westernmost province of Aceh.

Strong quake jolts northern Japan, felt in Tokyo

Reuters – 1 hr 11 mins ago

TOKYO, Nov 20 - A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.5 jolted the Ibaragi Prefecture near Tokyo on Sunday, Japanese public broadcaster NHK said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injury.

The earthquake also had no impact on the tsunami-crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant, Tokyo Electric Power Co said. No tsunami warning was issued.

The quake struck at around 10:23 a.m. (8:23 p.m. EST) about 130 km (80 miles) north of Tokyo, the Japan Meteorological Agency said, and was felt in the capital. Its depth was about 10 km (6 miles).

The U.S. Geological Survey measured the quake with an initial magnitude of 5.2.

On March 11, Japan's northeast coast was struck by a magnitude 9 earthquake, the strongest quake on record in Japan, and a massive tsunami, which triggered the world's worst nuclear crisis since Chernobyl 25 years ago.

The disaster left up to 23,000 dead or missing.

Earthquakes are common in Japan, one of the world's most seismically active areas. The country accounts for about 20 percent of the world's earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater.

6th earthquake in 4 days recorded in Oklahoma

AP – 4 hrs ago

SPARKS, Okla. (AP) — Another small earthquake has been reported in Oklahoma.

The U.S. Geological Survey says a 3.2 magnitude quake struck just before 6 a.m. Sunday about 27 miles northeast of Oklahoma City. The Logan County Sheriff's Office says no damage was reported

On Saturday, a 2.4 magnitude tremor was recorded at about 7 a.m. about 50 miles northeast of Oklahoma City near Sparks.

Sunday's earthquake is the sixth in the area since Thursday, when a 3.7 magnitude quake was recorded near Prague. Three more were recorded Friday.

A 5.6 magnitude quake, the strongest ever recorded in Oklahoma, shook the state Nov. 5. That quake damaged dozens of homes, buckled a highway and caused other damage.

Geologists say earthquakes with magnitudes of 2.5 to 3.0 are generally the smallest felt by humans.
